Cornwall is known for tin mining since the Bronze Age, and mining was done until the last century. Today the remains of the mines are scattered all over the Cornish coast.
Legend has it that the patron saint of Cornwall, St. Piran, discovered the tin here, and the molten tin that comes of the black ore was the inspiration to the black and white Cornish flag (see header).
